Quote of the Week

“Remember, a horse’s stride is only four yards long, so even if you are [at] the worst possible distance, you are only two yards away from the perfect one.”
—Irish show jumper David Simpson setting us straight on silver linings and finding that perfect takeoff spot every time.

The Irish rider, who currently sits 50th on the Longines Ranking List, is hitting his stride in a big way this summer, jumping clear rounds all weekend during the GCL and LGCT of Monaco with the 10-year-old Belgian stallion, Ipswich van de Wolfsakker. This is the first LGCT Grand Prix win for Breen, who has also qualified to compete in the 1.25 million-Euro LGCT Super Grand Prix in Prague this December. “I’m just over the moon,” he said.

PonyWorld Take

Ipswich is one of a handful of talented horses that the hardworking Irishman has on his string this season, including his ride of a year, Can Ya Makan; the talented 9-year-old stallion, Clyde VA (who recently took home the Hickstead Master's Trophy); and the 17-year-old Acorad 3, with whom he won the puissance at Equerry Bolesworth last month, clearing a staggering 7'3"! Breen has been a longstanding fixture on the international show jumping circuit and looks to be peaking at just the right time. Bring on the Prague Playoffs!

The Week’s Big Drama…

Is it too hot for your dog at the horse show?

As temperatures soar around the globe, the U.K.’s RSPCA has been fielding hundreds of complaints about animals in too-hot environments, especially in cars. If your dog is a horse show regular, that can present a predicament for many owners: is your dog safer at home or safer at the show—and out in the heat—with you? Eleanor Jones explains.

Is this heaven or the new JMS Retirement Facility? You decide.

The horses have officially been put out in their summer pastures at John Madden Stables in Cazenovia, New York, and it’s truly something to behold. And while we're sure there’s probably a former champion or two galloping across that big field somewhere (Authentic, is that you?), you don't have to be an ex-grand prix horse to know that at Madden Mountain, life is good.
